When custom development pays off
Off-the-shelf vs. bespoke software — how to decide and what to ask before you start a project.
One of the most common questions we hear from clients is: "Can't we just use an off-the-shelf product?" The answer is almost always "it depends" — and it depends on the specifics.
An existing product is the fastest route if your needs match what it offers. But as soon as you start hitting limitations, working around the system or paying for features you never use, it is time to consider custom development.
When off-the-shelf is right
If you need standard features — invoicing, inventory, a simple shop — an existing product is usually the best choice. It is faster, cheaper and someone else is responsible for running it.
When custom development pays off
Custom development pays off when your requirements are specific, when you need to integrate several systems, or when you want full control over your data and logic.
Typically this means the market has no suitable tool, an existing product forces you to change established processes, or licensing costs exceed the cost of building your own.
What to ask
Before starting, go through scope, budget, timeline and who will own the result. If your vendor does not want to hand over the source code, that is a red flag.
