Web or mobile app? How to decide

When the web is enough and when a native mobile app pays off — a practical guide to choosing a platform.

Another common question: should we start with the web, or go straight to a mobile app? The answer depends on your users, what they need from the app, and your budget.

Often the right answer is "both" — but in a certain order.

When the web is enough

A web app is available immediately, needs no install and works on every device. If your users mostly work on a computer or need only occasional access, the web is usually the best first step.

Progressive web apps also handle many things that used to require a native app — offline mode, notifications or device access.

When a native app pays off

A native app pays off when you need performance, hardware access, reliable notifications or offline work. Also when the app is the core of your business and users open it daily.

How to decide

Start from your users and their situation, not the technology. Sometimes the best route is web first, and a mobile app once you know people really want it.
