How to choose technologies for a new project
What to base technology choices on, and why the team that knows them matters more than trends.
Technology choices are often treated as a matter of taste or trends. In reality they decide the cost of development and operations, and how easily you can find people to work on the project.
The best technology is the one your team can maintain — not the one everyone is talking about.
What to base the decision on
Consider the size of the project, expected lifetime, availability of developers, the ecosystem, and how well it fits with your other systems. Trends are the weakest argument.
When to pick mainstream
For most projects, proven technologies with a large community pay off. It is easier to hire people, documentation exists, and the risk of the technology disappearing is smaller.
When to go specialised
When the project has specific requirements — performance, integration or operational constraints — a more specialised tool can be worth it. But the decision must come from a need, not a trend.
