A dedicated team or in-house developers?

When it pays to extend your team with external developers, and when to build your own.

Company growth often hits the limits of the development team. There are two routes: hire people or extend the team with external capacity. Each has its place.

The decision is not about which is better, but which makes sense for your situation and stage of the project.

When an external team fits

When you need capacity fast, a deadline to catch up on, or experience you do not have in-house. Also when the project has a clear end, or the work is not your core business.

When to build your own team

If software is the core of your business and you want long-term control and knowledge inside the company, investing in your own team pays off — even if it takes longer.

How to combine them

Often the best compromise is both: the in-house team holds product knowledge while an external team adds capacity or expertise. What matters is clear rules and a single accountable owner.
